Piano lessons for every age
Piano is where a great many musicians start, and where a great many adults come back to. It shows the whole structure of music laid out in front of you, which makes it the clearest instrument to learn theory on and a useful second instrument for string players.
Children
Young beginners start with posture, hand shape, and short pieces they can play well rather than long pieces they can play approximately.
Theory and composer study are woven into lessons rather than sold separately. Students learn who wrote the music, roughly when, and what else was happening in the world at the time.
Adults
Adult beginners are common and very welcome. Some are starting from nothing, some are returning to an instrument they left at fourteen and have thought about ever since.
Adults tend to progress quickly at the start because they understand what they are aiming at, then hit the same plateaus everyone does. Having a teacher through that stretch is most of the value.
The school year
Thirty-five lessons from August through June, group sessions two or three times a month, and three recitals across the year.
Tuition is $2,500 for the year, or $250 a month. Recitals and community performances are included rather than billed separately.
Questions parents ask
Do I need a piano at home to start lessons?
You need something to practice on. A full acoustic piano is ideal, but a weighted digital keyboard with 88 keys works perfectly well for the first few years.
How old should a child be to start piano?
Four or five works well for most children, and some three year olds do beautifully. It depends more on the individual child than on the number.
How far is the studio from Atlanta?
The studio is in Smyrna, a short drive from Vinings, Mableton, Marietta and northwest Atlanta.
Is it too late to start as an adult?
No. Adults learn piano successfully at every age, and beginning in your fifties or later is entirely reasonable.
